At Bloodstock Genetics our goal is to apply sound genetic principles to each breeding decision in order to produce superior animals.

We strive not only to breed sound animals with good temperment that exemplify the traditional English Shepherd qualities, but we select for larger dogs better suited to serve as protectors of home and hearth.

Loyalty:English Shepherds are loyal to their families and know where home is. They are sometimes known as "English Shadows" or "Velcro Dogs".

Protective Instinct:English Shepherds have been known to take on bobcats, rattlesnakes, bears, bulls, and wild dogs as well as human intruders to protect their families and/or flocks. They seem to sense when someone is a threat to their families' safety.

Bidability:English Shepherds have both intelligence and the desire to please their families. With a little common sense training they are very responsive and obedient.

Herding Instinct:In the best strains this instinct goes hand in hand with their protective instinct which results in an almost maternal concern for the welfare of the animals (and children) in their care. Some strains herd more from prey drive or the desire to be dominant.

Size:We select for increased size as well as soundness. Bloodstock Genetics personal breed goal calls for sound males 24 to 26 inches tall and weighing 60 to 85 pounds and sound females 23 to 25 inches tall weighing 55 to 75 pounds. We believe there is a real need for dogs from both ends of this spectrum depending on each individual situation. Also please note the heights as well as the weights. A larger dog requires a larger frame with adequate bone in order to be effective and remain sound.
