SOUND GENETICS PRODUCE SOUND DOGS
Sound dogs start with sound bloodlines.
There are numerous factors involved in breeding sound dogs. Start with dogs from a sound background and then select sound individuals from those bloodlines. This requires constant study and ongoing evaluations.
There are two areas to consider; Genotype and Phenotype;
A dog who is sound may or may not produce sound offspring. There are no sure things, but one may greatly increase the chance of success by looking for soundness in the pedigree, in the individual, and in the offspring (when available) of that individual, and then making correct mating or culling decisions based on available information.
Constant evaluation is required each step of the way. There are many tools that can be used and there are many aspects to soundness. The one most people will think of today is sound hips and this is extremely important. But a sound temperment is equally important in a using dog as well as a family pet and both should be taken into consideration.
In addition, there are many other aspects of soundness, such as hearing, vision, heart, lung health and capacity, feet etc. In the final analysis, each aspect must be considered as a part of the whole picture when evaluating future breeding choices.
At Bloodstock Genetics we take every aspect of soundness into consideration as we strive to produce sound dogs through sound genetics.
